Arctic Grub selected as one of the top 60 Scandinavian blogs on the web!

I am thrilled to announce that my blog, Arctic Grub, has been selected as one of the top 60 Scandinavian blogs on the web!!

The criteria for making the list were:

  • Google reputation and Google search ranking
  • Influence and popularity on Facebook, twitter and other social media sites
  • Quality and consistency of posts.
  • Feedspot’s editorial team and expert review

You can read the post and see the other bloggers who made the list here

I started this blog back in 2012 because I felt homesick not only for true Norwegian food and recipes, but also I had grown increasingly curious and interested in learning more about my own country’s culture and history and why we eat the way we eat.  I managed to find a lot of articles on the “how” to make a dish, but never the “why” behind it. This is what inspired Arctic Grub, and I started to blog about the foods from the fjords of Norway, where I’m from.

My readers have been very loyal, with me since I created my blog almost six years ago and wrote about the classic dishes of røykalaks (smoked salmon), rømmegrøt (sour cream porridge), bløtkaker (cream cake) and beyond.

In late 2013 I decided to go vegan, and announced that I was no longer going to be writing about animal based dishes, but rather find a way to veganize all the traditional Norwegian recipes I grew up with.  It was a big decision, and  I was nervous I would lose a lot of followers, but I’m happy to say most of you stayed, and for that I am forever grateful.  I’ve put so much work into this blog – hours and hours upon research, recipe tasting, marketing on social media and more, but my followers make it all worth it.

Arctic Grub will always be a labor of love for me, first and foremost. I don’t make any money off my blog (yet), I write from the heart, and only when I feel inspired.

Thank you to all my wonderful readers for your amazing support – I appreciate every single one of you! I hope you will be inspired to remain with me in the years to come as I am planning many exciting posts and projects in the near and far ahead future!

Thanks also to Anuj Agarwal and for including me in this exciting list of incredible Scandinavian bloggers!

I enjoy your blog, but need to say the following.

I was raised in Bergen just a few blocks from the fish market, and left for the States with my parents when I was nine. That was in 1957. So over the years when I have had the occasion to enjoy Norwegian food, it has usually been with all the frills, fat, butter etc.

Having said that, my wife and I have always been aware of our diets, and physical activities. We eat plenty of fish, with an occasional portion of chicken, pork or beef. As a result, now at 70, we are both in good health.

So when I dig into my old moms recipes, I try to compromise between her all out everything goes, and our low fat diet, and usually come up with something resembling what she did those many years ago.

But just once in a while, the good old stuff is still pretty good, even if it comes with a little dietary guilt.

A well known doctor friend of mine here in Northern California once said ….”moderation is the key to a healthy life”, and I truly believe that. We live 20 minutes from Napa Valley, so along with everything else, the good life comes with a good glass of Napa Valley red wine. Wish I could share that with all of you.

Keep up the good work. Love reading your blog.

Hi Rolf, thanks so much for your kind message – I enjoyed reading it! I think the key word you used were “occasional” and neither most Norwegians nor Americans practice that any longer, unfortunately hence all the health problems we see rising on both side of the oceans. Now I will say I went vegan for ethical, not health reasons, but I was also a meat, dairy and fish eater for 40 years so I believe I can appreciate and understand both sides 🙂

So glad you enjoy reading my blog, I truly appreciate it! And most certainly agree with that glass of Napa red you’re enjoying – love that area so much (I went to college in San Francisco)!

Look forward to staying in touch, Rolf!
